The involvement of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in cocaine trafficking in Central America during the Reagan Administration as part of the Contra war in Nicaragua has been the subject of several official and journalistic investigations since the mid-1980s.

In 1986, the Reagan Administration acknowledged that funds from cocaine smuggling helped fund the Contra rebels, but stated that it was not authorized by the US government or resistance leaders. The Kerry Committee found that Contra drug links included payments to known drug traffickers by the U.S. State Department to carry out humanitarian assistance to the Contras. A CIA internal investigation found that agents had worked with drug traffickers to support the Contra program, but found no evidence of any conspiracy by CIA or its employees to bring drugs   into the United States.

Former DEA agent Celerino Castillo III alleged that during the 1980s, Ilopango Airport in El Salvador was used by Contras for drug smuggling flights with the knowledge and complicity of the CIA. These allegations were part of an investigation by the United States Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General. Castillo also testified before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Between 1996 and 1998 the Central Intelligence Agency investigated and then published a report about its alleged involvement in cocaine sales in the US.

This was prompted by the journalist Gary Webb's report in the San Jose Mercury News alleging that the CIA was behind the 1980s crack epidemic. Gary Webb alleged through his Dark Alliance series that the government had been complicit in the trade of drugs in the inner city through the use of a kingpin named Freeway Ricky Ross. According to the Oakland Tribune, "In the course of his rise, prosecutors estimate that Ross exported several tons of cocaine to New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and elsewhere, and made more than $600 million in the process."

Webb began researching "Dark Alliance" in July 1995. The series was published in the Mercury News in three parts, from August 18-20, 1996, with one long article and one to two shorter articles appearing each day. It was also posted on the Mercury News website with additional information, including documents cited in the series and audio recordings of people quoted in the articles. The website logo showed the silhouette of a man smoking a crack pipe superimposed over the CIA seal.

The series became even more controversial when the Los Angeles Times and other major papers published articles suggesting its claims were overstated. After an internal review, the Mercury News ultimately published a statement in May 1997 acknowledging shortcomings in the series' reporting and editing. Webb resigned from the Mercury News in December 1997. He became an investigator for the California State Legislature, publishing a book based on the "Dark Alliance" series in 1998, and doing free-lance investigative reporting.

It was mafia connected companies that got the contracts with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to clean up the debris after 9/11. Anthony Fontanetta and Mark Jakubek were executives at the Port Authority and found guilty of racketeering and bribery involving millions in stolen cash from federal aid for ground zero clean up. About 19 others plead guilty as well in this racketeering. The port authority has a history with organized crime however on 9/11 the Port Authority's records were destroyed because they were located in Tower 7. Owners of the construction company Peter Scalamandre & Sons were convicted of paying off members of the Lucchese crime family for labor racketeering prior to 9/11. Peter Scalamandre & Sons was later shut down working as sub contractors during the ground zero clean up. The major clean up companies used smaller contractors to carry out much of the work. Many of the smaller contractors like Peter Scalamandre & Sons were connected with the Italian Mafia.

The major companies for the 9/11 clean up were the London AMEC subsidiary AMEC Construction, Bovis Lend Lease, Tully Construction and Turner Construction being funded with over 450 million for clean up. These larger companies used smaller sub contractors and many of these companies were tied with the Five Families and their associates. The subcontractors payments were in the range of 60 million of that 450 million in clean up aid. It is believed that about 63 million went to mafia connected construction and clean up companies.  Salvatore Carucci is believed to be a Lucchese associate and is the owner of Seasons Contracting which received over 26 million for his company's clean up work. Allen Monchik who has been convicted of fraud worked as a consultant making calls hours after 9/11 to the port authority, asbetos companies and to mafia associates like former Lucchese boss Louis Daidone and mafia associate Noel Modica. The District Attorney's investigators tracked these calls while investigating corruption involved with these asbestos companies.

On September 11, 2001 Donald Rumsfeld who was Jesuit educated from Georgetown ran the Department of Defense as Secretary of Defense, George Tenet who was also Jesuit educated from Georgetown ran the Central Intelligence Agency, and Michael Copps who was a Jesuit professor at Loyola University of New Orleans ran the Federal Communications Commission which regulates all broadcasting inside of the United States. The US armed forces, CIA, and FCC were all under the supervision of Jesuit alumni and professors. The real theft on 9/11 goes back to Franklin D Roosevelt and his Executive Order 6102 which criminalized the ownership of gold in the United States and demanded all gold to be handed in under the threat of fines and imprisonment. This gold was covertly held underneath the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. On 9/11 William Joseph McDonough was President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and was Jesuit educated from Georgetown and he oversaw this theft. After 9/11 the gold was removed from the FRBNY under the disguise of ground zero debris. The gold was then shipped out through the Port Authority and sent to London and Rome.

But China's destruction came not only from communists. Fateful decisions resulted when Roosevelt met with Stalin at the Teheran Conference (late 1943) and Yalta Conference (February 1945). Stalin, though our ally against Germany during World War II, maintained a nonaggression pact with Japan. This suited Stalin, as he wished the Japanese to wear down China's Nationalist forces.

At the Teheran and Yalta wartime conferences, however, Roosevelt asked Stalin if he would break his pact with Japan and enter the Far East war. Stalin agreed, but attached conditions. He demanded that America completely equip his Far Eastern Army for the expedition, with 3,000 tanks, 5,000 planes, plus all the other munitions, food, and fuel required for a 1,250,000-man army. Roosevelt accepted this demand, and 600 shiploads of Lend-Lease material were convoyed to the USSR for the venture. Stalin's Far Eastern Army swiftly received more than twice the supplies we gave Chiang Kai-shek during four years as our ally. 

General Douglas MacArthur protested after discovering that ships designated to supply his Pacific forces were being diverted to Russia. Major General Courtney Whitney wrote: "One hundred of his transport ships were to be withdrawn immediately, to be used to carry munitions and supplies across the North Pacific to the Soviet forces in Vladivostok.... Later, of course, they were the basis of Soviet military support of North Korea and Red China."

But Stalin didn't just want materiel in return for entering the Asian war. He also demanded control of the Manchurian seaports of Dairen and Port Arthur — which a glance at the map shows would give him an unbreakable foothold in China — as well as joint control, with the Chinese, of Manchuria's railroads. Roosevelt made these concessions without consulting the Chinese. Thus, without authority, he ceded to Stalin another nation's sovereign territory. The president made these pledges without the knowledge or consent of Congress or the American people.

The State Department official representing the United States in drawing up the Yalta agreement was Alger Hiss — subsequently exposed as a Soviet spy. General Patrick Hurley, U.S. Ambassador to China, wrote: "American diplomats surrendered the territorial integrity and the political independence of China ... and wrote the blueprint for the Communist conquest of China in secret agreement at Yalta." 

The decision to invite and equip Stalin — a known aggressor — into the Far East must go down among the worst acts of U.S. foreign policy. Stalin's divisions entered China to fight the already-beaten Japanese on August 9, 1945 — five days before Japan's surrender. The atom bomb had already pounded Hiroshima.

After barely firing a shot, the Soviets received surrender of Japan's huge arsenals in Manchuria. These, with their American Lend-Lease supplies, they handed over to Mao Tse-tung's communists to overthrow the Nationalist government.

A Mind-Blowing Number Of Counterfeit Goods Come From China

Amidst ongoing concerns about an undervalued yuan, growing Chinese military presence in the Pacific, and suspicions about Beijing-sponsored hacking into western computer networks, add this one to the list: China has been confirmed in its position as the world’s leading counterfeiting superpower.

According to a report recently released by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime entitled “Transnational Organized Crime in East Asia and the Pacific,” from 2008 to 2010 almost 70% of all counterfeits seized globally come from China.

For the US, the figure is higher: US Customs say that in the same period 87% of the value of counterfeits seized originated in China. Since the WTO estimates that 2% of all world trade is incounterfeit goods, the value of counterfeit goods imported into the US and EU from East Asia (the bulk of which come from China) is thought to be on the order of $120 billion annually.

China's Piracy & Counterfeiting Problems

On April 9, 2007, U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab announced that the United States will begin World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute settlement consultations with the People’s Republic of China over 1) deficiencies in China’s legal regime for protecting and enforcing copyrights and trademarks on a wide range of products, and 2) over China’s barriers to trade in books, music, videos and movies.

The WTO consultation request focuses on provisions of Chinese law that create a “safe harbor” for wholesalers and retailers who distribute or sell pirated and counterfeit products in China below a certain quantity. These safe harbors seem to allow sales of sufficient quantities of counterfeit goods that many large-scale wholesalers and distributors can operate below high thresholds without criminal liability, thus permitting large-scale piracy and counterfeiting. The U.S. also seeks that China destroy seized counterfeit goods, rather than allowing them to be sold into the marketplace after removal of their label. And that China protect foreign copyrights while such works are being reviewed by Chinese censors; and allow a greater importation of foreign media, such as movies.

A request for consultations is the first step in a WTO dispute. Under WTO rules, if the parties do not resolve a matter within a 60-day consultation period, then the complaining party may refer the matter to a WTO dispute settlement panel. Damage to Brand Names
The U.S. Commerce Department estimates that, on average, twenty percent of all consumer products in the Chinese market are counterfeit. When counterfeit products fail, it can impact the real brand’s reputation as well. In China and around the world, counterfeit Chinese medicines have injured and killed hundreds of thousands, ranging from toothpaste and cold medicine in Panama to diet pills in Japan. Chinese authorities estimated that nearly 200,000 people were killed in China in 2001 due to counterfeit medicines. In a recent raid on a printing factory in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, police seized bogus packaging and labels for Coca Cola bottles, Wrigley's chewing gum, General Mills'Trix breakfast cereal, and Nestle's Purina cat food. In order to prevent a scare similar to the Tylenol-tampering episode in the U.S. many years ago, foreign companies need shift into publicity overdrive to discredit and distinguish dangerous or shoddy counterfeit goods, lest their own products be tarred.

Similarly, counterfeit products impinge on the ability of Western companies to select and control their own distribution channels. Thus, even though Starbucks (SBUX) invested heavily in training its Chinese workers, it had to rush to court in 2003 to stop a copycat rival from misappropriating its logo and store look under the name “Xingbake” in 2003.
